Abra-*Sniff*-Cadabra: The teary-eyed illusionist
Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! It’s Showbiz Sista’s Little Helper Kat here again. A few weeks ago, I attended a press conference regarding the new Channel U series, The Illusionist.
Starting tonight and lasting thirteen episodes, it tells the story of a magician (Thomas Ong) and the struggles he faces in his career, including a failure to see eye-to-eye with his boss (Quan Yifong), and his own scepticism that, in reality, there is no such thing as magic. Other supporting cast members include Mei Xin, Jerry Yeo, and the sultry Ann Kok.
The cast of The Illusionist. Unfortunately, Mei Xin was unavailable at the time.
While speaking of his experience in shooting The Illusionist, it was all Thomas could do not to break down then and there. Prompted by Ann and Yifong on either side, he lamented how difficult it was for him because of his lack of preparation, and tearfully thanked those who had helped him along.
Things were no easier for Yifong, either, as she was forced to juggle her hosting and filming responsibilities at the same time. “It was tough being hostess Quan Yifong one day, and the domineering Irene Chan (her character) another. I felt utterly useless, like I was dragging everyone else down.”
Hopefully viewers don’t feel that way. The trailer for The Illusionist was a promising one, featuring lots of drama as well as mind-boggling magic tricks. A main character was even shown to pass away, although one can never really tell. After all, what you see isn’t always what you get – especially if there’s magic involved.
Catch The Illusionist starting tonight, every Monday to Friday, at 10pm on MediaCorp TV Channel U.
